  You do not want to shock your dog so use warm water to bath your dog. It is easier to use a shower or spray hose. Keep the nozzle head close to the fur and do not spray onto the dog’s face, as this could upset him.
Choosing the right dog shampoo is important, do not use human shampoos. Only use a little and commence with the head and top and wash downward and toward the tail. Be careful to avoid the eyes. Important parts to spend time on bathing well are under the chin, especially if the dog is messy with food, behind the ears, be thorough with the toes and the rectum.
Finish by rinsing with warm water, removing all the shampoo.
The dog will remove a lot of the water by shaking, so watch out!, then you can rub him down. You may like to use a hair dryer, especially women again! This is not normally needed unless you are needing to take him out. Let him finish drying off naturally inside.

To do this, you will need to use your hand to shut your dogs mouth, and to keep it shut until your dog has submitted and is calm. Since he will not enjoy this at all, you will need to grab ahold of his collar to keep him from moving away. Spraying him in the face from a small spray bottle of water will startle your dog, and make him stop barking for the moment. A can of pebbles is also good for startling your dog into  stopping the barking for a bit. Any of these 3 tricks should work for stopping the barking temporarily-at least while you are actually applying them. At the same time you stop the barking, you should also command your dog to “stop barking” or “be quiet”-whatever command you have chosen. At the end of a successful training to stop barking, your dog should stop when just given your verbal command.

• Correcting the problem of a dog barking too much due to stress and insecurity will require you to give your dog lots more attention by exercising him, playing with him and training him. All the activity should make your dog a happier, more confident dog, who won’t need to express his anxiety through barking.

• Once again, to correct a bored or lonely dog’s barking issues, will mean giving him much more exercise, playing and training.  A dog that is often left alone all day, without plenty of playing and exercising, is definitely more likely to develop this behavior. It is wise to give your dog at least the hour and a half minimum daily exercise time he needs.

• In order to deal with the problem of your dog barking excessively at you as he tries to get your attention (whether for food, play, or affection) you should say “no” firmly, then turn your back towards him and ignore your dog. Be sure not to let your dog be a bully to you. There is a good reason for this-in addition to the annoying barking, you need to be the Alpha dog here-not him. Your dog will not give you the respect you need to be the Alpha dog, if he is able to bully you around with his barking. You need to be the Alpha in order to get good results with your training

OK… so when any dogs bark, growl, whine or even howl it is a natural and normal behavior and their way of communicating with each other and with their human families.

Starting when they are young puppies they use vocalization to communicate. This may include crying sounds when they are frustrated, afraid, hurt, or soft whining sounds when they are hungry or cold. Older dogs make many different sounds for different situations such as:

* Whimpering or Whining – Dogs often use whining or whimpering as a means of communicating when they seek attention or show submissiveness when greeting other dogs. Many also whine when they are in pain, frustrated, lonely or want something, such as a dog treat or someone to take them for a walk.

* Howling – Many dogs use howling as a long-range means of communicating. If a dog can hear another howling in the distance they often howl back as a form of communicating. Some howl when they hear sirens, certain music or go hunting.

* Growling – As most owners will tell you, dogs growl not only as a warning, to show aggression, dominance and in defense but also when playing. A wagging tail and lots of movement may often accompany play growling. * There will be times when you must leave your dog alone. To get your pet used to this without barking, start by leaving the house for a few minutes.

Never make a fuss of your dog when you leave and after being gone a few minutes, come back in. Again, do not make a fuss of the dog.

Gradually increase the time you are away but make it seem very natural so your dog knows you will return. This way they do not feel as stressed.

* Some Lhasa Apsos are calmer when they hear a person’s voice so try leaving the radio on low.

* Try keeping your Lhasa Apso away from things that start him barking, such as looking out the window. Close your curtains or blinds and if this doesn’t work, give the command ‘quiet’ or ‘stop’, then slam a book down or shake a can full or marbles, to make a loud noise. Once he is quiet, have him sit, praise the dog and give it a treat.

* Exercise and mental stimulation are extremely important and help keep dogs from nuisance barking or exhibiting bad dog behavior.

Letting your Lhasa Apso out in the yard for a few minutes is not enough exercise. Your pet needs a long walk, brisk exercise or playtime daily, to run off some of his energy and keep his barking controlled.

Remember that a tired dog does not bark as much. When out walking, your dog smells and sees different sights, which keeps him from getting bored. Try teaching your Lhasa Apso new tricks or obedience training, as they need mental stimulation to keep them from barking.

Check out these more acceptable reasons for your dog to start his barking. These types of “good barking” examples are just forms of normal communication and are not caused by any behavioral issues that your dog may have.

• When something is approaching you, perhaps another dog or a stranger, your dog will bark to warn you. When your dog does this type of barking, it is to warn his master, and this is a good thing you won’t want to stop. However, you should be able to get your dog to stop his barking as soon as you command him to. For example, when someone parks in front of your house, and your dog warns you about it, you should be able to quiet him once you see the visitor is not a threat. In case the visitor isn’t someone you want on the property, you have the option of letting your dog’s “good barking” continue to serve as a deterrent. The key is to be able to control the dog barking. Although these reasons for dog barking are OK, other reasons indicate dog barking problems needing to be controlled.

• Another common reason your dog will bark is because he is happy and excited about something. My dogs always do some barking at me and at each other when we play. That is just the dog’s way of saying he is having a great time, and wants more of the same. When we are playing I only will quiet them down in the case of one of them getting a little carried away with the excitement.  If the barking is just sporadic and playful that is cool with me, but if one of them gets stuck on “bark” then I have to do something about it. That’s because one consequence of too much barking when playing is that it can become a habit for your dog, and at that point it is a problem-so try to keep the barking while playing at a reasonable level.
• Your dog may start barking when you first come home. This is a very common since your dog is excited to see you again, and this is acceptable as long as the barking is very brief. I like to be greeted at the gate by my dogs, and I don’t mind a couple greeting barks at all. If the dogs keep the barking up ,even after you’ve greeted them back, then it is not such a “good barking” anymore. That puts this behavior onto the unacceptable list because the dog doesn’t immediately stop barking after saying “Hi”.

• Your dog uses its bark sometimes to say it wants to play.  Continued barking at their master for some attention can be seen as a form of bullying by the dog. My dog had me pretty well trained through her bullying, so I know what this is like first hand. Actually, you should be the one to initiate the play or at least decide when to play. If you let the dog think it is the boss instead of you, you will make all other training more difficult. If your dog is bullying you, don’t let it, because it is important that you are always viewed as the boss in the relationship-not the other way around.

As far as I am concerned the above list of good reasons for barking are acceptable as long as the barking is limited and under control. But, except for these few, the majority of other reasons dogs bark too much should be corrected.

During my routine early walk in the morning with my dog, we came across a dog running loose. Normally, that in itself is no reason for alarm. Because I have lots of experience recognizing aggressive body language in dogs, I could tell from a distance that something about this dog was wrong. As he got closer I could tell at a glance that he meant trouble. He was heading for us with a serious look and body language that was anything but friendly. Although he wasn’t yet barking and growling,  even before this dog got close to us, it was easy to tell by his aggressive body language that his intentions were not friendly ones. I was able to change my path and thus avoid having a problem with the aggressive dog because I could read the other dog’s aggressive body language.

The body language  of an aggressive dog is very different from more mellow body languages they employ, and it is a very good idea for you to be able to spot aggression in dogs so you can avoid a potential dog fight from occurring. You have probably noticed how dogs will usually demonstrate to each other who is the dominant dog and who is the submissive dog.  A dog fight normally only occurs when one of the dogs refuses to become submissive to the other dog and when both want to assert their own dominance.

Here are some ways to learn how to recognize aggressive body language in dogs so you can hopefully avoid encounters that could lead to a dog fight. With my own aggressive dogs, until I finally got serious and trained them better, I could  never take them out in public without a leash on them for fear of one of my dogs starting a fight. If you have an aggressive dog, it is your responsibility  always have control of your pet when he is out in public.
